Introduction

The New York High Tech Community has many events going on a weekly basis. We show each other what we are working on at meetups, we have panel discussions, we get together at coffee shops to work together. We even drink together at TechDrinks.

While all these add up to a busy social schedule, we believe that we don’t have a venue for good conversation. The purpose of these is for a small group to get together and talk about a topic of shared interest. The hope is that these conversation will ultimately lead to useful and actionable ideas.

To initiate a Dinner Salon:

This should be an organic endeavor. Anybody is empowered to create a Dinner Salon on any topic at any time. To create good Dinner Salon, go to the wiki page and create a topic you are interested in discussing. Send out an email to the list directing people to sign up on the wiki page. Once a week passes, email to the people on the list privately and organize a meeting time.

Suggestions:

Keeping it small is key to having an intimate conversation. 6-8 people interested in a topic should be a sweet spot. If more people sign up, the conversation should be split up into several groups.

  • Keep it small, 6-8 people for dinner.
  • Set a maximum of 10 people for RSVP in case a couple of people are no-shows.
  • One person should prepare a list of questions to be discussed
  • To avoid overlap with other events, consider late dinner (i.e. 9ish) ‚Äì that might allow for more people to join
  • (Optional) To share knowledge, one of the people should volunteer to write up a summary of the ideas discussed to share it with other interested people.

How This Related to Existing Communities:

1. How does this play with Brainstorms that CooBric has been putting together?

Brainstorms are about sharing ideas, showing what you are working on, soliciting feedback, and doing things. This is more about in-depth discussion of a specific topic. The idea originated from wanting to discuss some of the topics in the brainstorm longer.

2. How is this different from meetups?

Existing tech-related meetups are about people who have continued interest in a topic. The idea here is to draw on the NextNY community and match people up who have specific interest in a topic.

3. How does this fit in with BarCamp?

Barcamp doesn’t happen often enough, and often has more of a technical orientation. This is more to discuss ideas and concepts, not how to implement the next widget.

Suggested Locations:

Please contribute suggestions for some nice quiet restaurants that are not too expensive, have “something for everyone”, conducive to having a conversation but also can accommodate a group of six-eight people quite easily.

  • Sahara (Turkish) ‚Äì 513 2nd Ave, New York 10016

  • Grand Central Food Court
